about
“Top Floor” is a wintertime meditation on our work; on what we choose to build and choose to neglect in our lives. Written with the first flakes of a morning snowstorm, “Top Floor” was born considering those that built the room in the same conditions, so that we may make our own contributions in the only way that meaningful work can be done: brick by brick.
The colors red and white are cornerstone inspirations for the brick, mortar, and snow that stand defiant in the “dark months” of early winter.
lyrics
---Top Floor---
Top floor for the dark months
Where the red of the brick looks like some blood on the wall of a
Hospital that went and let it dry
After the nurse finally broke, she couldn’t come and not cry
Well but, that’s just a mind
Taking words from its eyes
Who both are hiding from cell phones that still say hours of snow
Now those cracks painted white trick the snowflakes to hide
Where some men poured the mortar, laid bricks and more mortar
Like we all do
Like we all do
Our love started, we weren’t looking
Now we rhyme like these months, and we smile like the sun
You know I’m near sighted, I know what you’re hiding
You’re a child in your heart, babe we all are
Top floor, watching seasons shift phases
Standing on strong shoulders but they hardly approve
Sometimes life’s changes happen quickly and when we choose
Or we fray the rope we held on
hurting hands and heart to move on
Like we all do
Like we all do
